  • Why Wearable Art?

Author Monisola Omotoso shares the story behind Wearable Art

Wearable Art explores the intersection of abstract art and garment construction through pattern cutting and draping. The idea was sparked when I came across Serge Poliakoff’s Composition Abstraite —the bold shapes reminded me of dress pattern pieces, prompting a question: What if Art could be transformed directly into clothing? Instead of a traditional pattern, each project starts with an artwork, deconstructed into its visual elements. These shapes are traced, scaled, and turned into abstract pattern pieces for draping on a dress form.

This approach offers a creative, less intimidating way for students and makers to engage with pattern cutting. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced practitioner, the projects provide adaptable templates and encourage you to interpret the process in your own way—building confidence while discovering new possibilities at the intersection of fashion and art.
