• Do you want to learn professional pattern cutting techniques?

Then don't do a general pattern cutting course.

    Here's why...

  • Do You Feel...

...overwhelmed by the sheer number of processes and techniques. Come to think of it, sleeves and armholes are scary too.

...unsure what to do if you draft a pattern that doesn’t fit properly even after re-checking the measurements chart that you made.

...that you'll never have the skills to design a fancy pattern simply by looking at it, as you think you're just not creative enough?

...fed up that there are pattern making processes that fill you with dread, and that the time has come to tackle more advanced techniques.

...permanently confused about when to apply flat pattern cutting or draping techniques and dream of being able to switch between the two methods seamlessly.

...unsure where to find the missing pieces of knowledge to advance your skills and gain more confidence, even if you've been pattern cutting for a long time?

  • Contrary to what people think, you don't have to be a whizz at maths to make a perfectly fitting pattern or spend hours fiddling around to create a garment you're proud of.

  •

I don't design and pattern cut in every single medium...

I specialise in creative flat cutting and draping; there’s a whole world of CAD pattern cutting that I’ve never explored. Having worked in the fashion industry for over 30 years - designing and pattern cutting ladies wear in wovens and jersey - I know that you don’t have to "do it all” to gain success. However, it's quite rare to find someone like myself who has a background in both design and pattern cutting. Most people will focus on one or the other and build their entire career around that.

During my years working as a designer and pattern cutter I came to realise two things. The first was that creative thinking happens in short, intense bursts. The second was that time must be spent focusing on each of the finer details. These are what make or break an outfit. I’ve applied this understanding to my teaching methods. I use step-by-step processes which enable my students to learn and engage in short, bursts of time. I also actively guide them to focus on the finer details of each professional technique.

I believe this is why they get great results.

  • Hey there I'm Moni

    Pattern cutting teacher

My name is Monisola Omotoso and I'm a pattern cutting teacher for people who want to possess the techniques to create any pattern they can imagine using professional pattern cutting skills.

My favourite thing ever is to hear from people who have been stopped dead in their tracks because they now have ideas AND the newfound skills to create them. I'm known for my step-by-step teaching approach and keen eye for the finer details that can make or break the look of a garment. But what really keeps budding pattern cutters, home sewers and fashion students coming back to learn from my speedy signature videos and pattern making kits, and now in 1-2-1 classes with me personally?

I help you apply clear instructions and professional methods that work whatever your level of skill.

  • What can you get from your 1-2-1 sessions?

The best thing about this tuition is that you get to design a personalised learning experience. I can teach you anywhere in the world as sessions are via ZOOM. When we talk we can figure out exactly what you have in mind but let me share a few examples of the type of sessions you might choose.

    Case Study 1

Abi was a beginner who was completely overwhelmed - processes, techniques, even knowing which fabric to choose daunted her. Her ideal starting point was to get to grips with some of the Industrial Pattern Making techniques. She started with five skills: taking body measurements correctly, making her own block, dart manipulation, openings and experimenting with sleeve techniques. She also had an introduction on the suitability of different fabrics for various designs.

Abi selected Programme B with 12 hours of expert tuition.

    Case Study 2

Nina was an intermediate; industrial flat pattern cutting wasn’t an issue as she could already transfer darts to tucks, gathers and pleats, and take body measurements too. However, she did struggle with some of the processes, particularly sleeves and armholes. This is really very common, but poor Nina said this ‘filled her with dread’. The other thing she really wanted to get out of her lesson was more confidence. She hoped to make the leap from manipulating a basic block to creating a unique piece, and she wanted to be 100% certain that by the time she finished drafting, her pattern pieces would true-up and fit together perfectly.

I recommended that Nina start with a refresher on the basics, to confirm exactly what her skills were. You see if she hadn’t made the link between creating a unique piece and the basic block, it meant that there was some technique thing she hadn’t quite got to grips with, such as working with darts or creating design lines.

Nina chose Programme C with 20 hours of expert tuition.

    Case Study 3

Pam was confident in her industrial and creative pattern cutting skills and was close to having the complete pattern-making toolkit under her belt. She hoped to focus on draping a set of blocks and needed enough time to work on a variety of blocks for tops/dresses, jackets and trousers. In the last few years she noticed her shape had changed. Pam’s classes included taking correct measurements and how to pad the mannequin to reflect her shape.

Pam’s best option was Programme D which gave her 40 hours of expert tuition and enough time to work on each of her blocks.

  •

Before we take a closer look at the programmes here are the pattern cutting skills you could learn

  • ***

    INDUSTRIAL PATTERN CUTTING

    Flat Pattern Cutting

These are the Core skills of pattern cutting. By adapting shapes from block patterns and working on the flat you’ll learn the basic skills that can be applied when creating your own designs (be they tops, dresses, skirts, trousers or jackets).

    These include:

Taking correct measurements, moving darts around the blocks

creating openings, transferring darts to seams, constructing collars, transferring darts to tucks, gathers and pleats, and adapting sleeves.

This type of pattern cutting is perfect if you’re a complete beginner. Once you’ve mastered these skills you can confidently move on to creative pattern cutting.

    CREATIVE PATTERN CUTTING

    Flat Pattern Cutting

This differs from Industrial Pattern Cutting because it’s more design-led and flamboyant.

Creative flat pattern cutting follows the same guidelines as industrial pattern cutting - you use a block to create your pattern shapes and the whole process is more precise and predictable.

Flat pattern cutting can help you create patterns for your own designs.

This type of pattern cutting is perfect if you already have the basic skills.

    CREATIVE PATTERN CUTTING

    Draping

Draping on the mannequin is a more sculptural, experimental way to create clothing. By draping fabric directly onto the mannequin you’re able to visualise your design as it develops. Once the drape has been done, each section of fabric is then removed from the mannequin, laid onto paper and turned into a pattern piece.

Draping can help you create patterns for your own designs. This type of pattern cutting is perfect if you already have the basic industrial pattern cutting skills.

    BLOCK DEVELOPMENT

What do you do if your body shape doesn’t fit into standard European patterns?

    You make your own blocks.

Block development can be done either on the flat or with the draping method. In either case you’ll start by taking correct measurements but all of the other techniques involved will depend on the method you use.

Block development is ideal if your body shape is non-standardised. You can create blocks for tops, dresses, jackets, skirts or trousers. Once the blocks are developed you can go on to create your own perfectly fitting design patterns. You’ll also be able to apply all of the industrial or creative pattern cutting processes to the blocks that you’ve made.
